Our WWOOF hosts, Charlotte and Luca of Agriturimso Due Papaveri, let us tag along for an afternoon at the Carnevale di Benedello, a festival celebrating the end of winter and the beginning of the new harvest season.  This is exactly the type of small town tradition that is central to Italian food culture.  We ate gramigna pasta with ragù, tigelle with pesto modenese (lard spread)  and parmesano, affettati misti (prosciutto, salami, etc), and an assortment of cakes baked by the family’s in attendance.  We had to leave the party after lunch so we missed the rest of the celebration which included dancing in the piazza and the Rogo Della Vecchia (the burning of an old structure to symbolize the start of the new year).
